After dinner one night Ruby said she needed to talk with me. And that she wanted to be alone just the two of us. So I suggested her closet. She brought in her larger Grammy blanket and put it over our heads creating a tent of sorts and a cone-of-silence for our conversation. I smiled, she definitely had my undivided attention in our private drawing room painted in an eerie pink light from the light shining through the blanket. Ruby needed to tell me about her hurt feelings and frustrations from earlier in the day while playing with other kids at high fitness. It boiled down to, she was upset that she wasn’t the oldest child there and it really bothered her when they responded with, “well, I’m older.” I’m glad Ruby feels like i am a safe parent and someone she can confide in.
